How tall can a fence be in Los Angeles?
Updated October 2026
In most City of Los Angeles residential areas, a fence can be up to 3 feet 6 inches tall in the front yard and 6 feet tall in side and rear yards. On some lots, depending on size and location, side and rear fences can go up to 8 feet. Overlays and Fence Height Districts can change these limits.
What are the standard height limits?
| Where on the lot | Typical maximum |
|---|---|
| Required front yard | 3 ft 6 in |
| Side and rear yards | 6 ft |
| Side and rear yards, some lots | Up to 8 ft, depending on lot size and location |
| Pool enclosure (state minimum) | At least 60 in tall |
Can a front-yard fence be taller than 3½ feet?
Only in certain cases. Parts of the city are mapped as Fence Height Districts. There, front-yard fences up to 6 feet are allowed if they meet conditions in the Zoning Code, including:
- An open design such as wrought iron, with any solid portion no taller than 3½ feet.
- A setback of at least 18 inches from the front property line.
- Landscaping in front of the fence with automatic irrigation.
- On corner lots, a 10-by-10-foot visibility triangle kept clear above 3½ feet.
Outside those districts, a taller front fence needs zoning approval from the city.
What other rules can lower or change the limit?
- Specific plans and overlay zones, including Historic Preservation Overlay Zones, can set their own fence rules.
- Corner lots and driveways often need clear sight lines so drivers can see traffic and pedestrians.
- HOA rules can be stricter than the city.
- Other cities: Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank and Santa Monica each set their own limits.
Which height should I build?
Build 6 feet if…
you want back-yard privacy. It is the standard side and rear limit in most LA residential zones and blocks most sight lines.
Build 3½ feet or less if…
the fence is in the front yard and you are not in a Fence Height District. An open metal or picket design works well at this height.
Look into 8 feet if…
you need more screening in a side or rear yard and your lot qualifies. We check before quoting.
Build at least 60 inches if…
the fence is a pool barrier. That is the California minimum.
