Wood vs vinyl fence: which is better for a Los Angeles yard?
Updated October 2026
Pick vinyl if you want a privacy fence you never stain or paint and you plan to stay for years. Pick wood if you want a natural or custom look, easy repairs, and a similar or lower upfront price. In Los Angeles both cost roughly $15 to $55 per foot installed as of October 2026.
How do wood and vinyl compare side by side?
| Wood | Vinyl | |
|---|---|---|
| Installed cost per foot (LA) | About $20 to $45 | About $15 to $40; tall privacy up to about $55 |
| Typical lifespan | About 15 years (pine) to 30 years (cedar) with care | About 20 to 30 years |
| Upkeep | Stain or seal every 1 to 2 years | Wash occasionally |
| Repairs | Replace single boards or posts | Usually replace whole panels |
| Look | Natural, any style or color of stain | Uniform; limited colors |
Which handles LA sun and heat better?
Both take a beating from strong sun. Wood dries, grays and can crack if it is not sealed, especially in hotter inland areas like the San Fernando Valley. Vinyl does not dry out, but long UV exposure can fade it and make it more brittle, and heat makes it expand. Quality matters for both: sealed redwood or cedar, and UV-stabilized vinyl from an established brand.
Which is better near the coast?
Vinyl is not affected by damp marine air. Wood near the coast stays damp longer, so good drainage at the posts and corrosion-resistant fasteners matter. See fences in Santa Monica.
Which looks better on my house?
On Craftsman, Spanish and other period homes, stained wood usually looks more at home. On newer and modern homes, both work; horizontal wood and modern vinyl panels are both common. See Pasadena for older-home examples.
